Pay Per Play aims to be the new annoying popup

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or get your blog updates by email. Thanks for visiting!

The common popup has always been the most obnoxious and most hated advertisement medium on the internet. Well it looks like a new product may try to take the top of the hill. A company called Net Audio Ads and has “invented” a new form of advertising that webmasters can take a part in.

They calls this new idea “Pay Per Play” (No affiliate link) and it is a 5 second audio clip that is played when you first load the website. The idea in theory would bring a lot of sales, but in my opinion, it is the worst kind of advertising you could take a part in. The sound clip loads EVERY TIME a page is loaded and automatically starts playing with no mute feature. I agree that the conversions may be higher than buying an Adsense advertisement, but I will NEVER run audio ads on my blog. If I ever come across a blog that has an audio advertisement that I cannot mute or turn off, I will stop reading it immediately. Although it is marketed as a way to monetize 100% of your visitors, that will not do you any good when you lose 95% of your fans. The problem I see in the future is that they have implemented an affiliate system where you can earn 5% of the revenue of those that you refer. Like most affiliate sales, the referrer falsely promotes the idea like it will be the internet’s best new thing, but this is really only hype to sell the product and make the blogger more money.

Pay Per Play has got to be the STUPIDEST way to monetize a website that I have ever heard of. For the love of all your visitors, never use pay per play aka net audio ads, and don’t fall for any affiliate link hype. I recommend you do the research yourself, so that you may hate it with a passion as well.

It looks like Ian Fernando agrees with me in his post 5 seconds of annoyance. I am glad not everyone falls into the hype of tricking others into joining only to make more money. Thank you Ian!

Update: it looks like the false hype + referral link cash train has already started on IMNewsWatch… such a pity.

For the sake of keeping our internet clean without a 5 second advertisement on every page, Digg this article up. Don’t always believe the hype!

I just had a look at IMNW, one of the bullet points claim that this is a non-intrusive way to advertise because it’s only 5 secs long! I actually like this idea. All that traffic will have to go somewhere else, won’t it? ;)

i have to agree. sound and video on a website should be controlled by the user. and it should definitely not play automatically. that’s one of the beefs i have with searchles as well.

[...] as well as for how long. Now I don’t want you to get confused about my negative post on Pay Per Play, because I feel that Pay Per Glance is a great idea if they can properly execute the concept. [...]

Another problem that Pay Per Play has is that the company that is the back bone of the delivery medium, voice2page, has made many false claims in the past and Pay Per Play is making false claims in their marketing materials.

I have asked Charles to respond but he has not done so. This one is a loser from concept, marketing and the company supporting it.

I for one hate Adsense [since it draws my visitors away from my blog] and have embraced pay per play. I’ve already signed up half a dozen affiliates and can’t wait for the launch. Monetizing a blog is tough work and I bust my chops maintaining it and answering emails daily. If a 5 second audio ad bothers my visitors I’m sure the free advice & consultation I offer will keep them there!

An audio ad can get really annoying in my personal opinion. I can bet if you took a sitewide poll, people would find a small advertisement much less obtrusive and far more profitable than a “sound popup.”

At any rate, best of luck with cashing in on affiliate sales.

draws your visitors away from your blog? what do you want your visitors to do on your blog? if I close your blog isn’t it the same thing, since I am leaving your blog? why not earn on exits? affiliates and adsense?

also PPP will be really annoying, especially if there is no optin to play the ad. I have received tons of emails to join their system the day it came out - I just think the PPP system will be of annoyance rather than a positive, IMO

You should go to the site and get some details, really it sounds like a good opportunity to me, and many of the thing you mention are not correct, The ads are only 5 seconds, and only play once, and I hear they have a button to open the advertised page in a separate window, so the viewer does not loose ,or leave your site!
I like it! :)

IMHO, popup advertising is an annoying ads medium.
