Well, this post doesn’t really have anything to do with link building, but I thought some of you would enjoy it.
Being an internet entrepreneur and having an INTP personality, I have a knack for thinking of crazy and unique website ideas that could potentially become incredibly viral or make a bunch of money. While some of my ideas have done remarkably well, others have not due to my lack of time, investment, or determination to develop and launch them.
When I come up with some of my unique startup ideas, I always jot them down and save them in a notepad document in case I ever plan on launching them in the future. Well, today’s post is a bunch of my startup ideas that have been sitting in my text document for a long time and I do not plan on launching them due to me having a bunch of other more important stuff going on in my life right now.
Some of my ideas are laughable, some still have incredible amounts of potential if anyone plans on taking the time and capital to run with them, but at the very least, I hope you enjoy them.

+++++++++++++++++ PAIDPAGE.com
It will be a “Paid Home Page” (PaidPage.com)
The site will be the first website to PAY the users to replace their default start page (Generally Google.com), with a customized start page that will be comprised of a frame at the top with our logo and a google search field (I can provide the code for the search engine). The bottom 90% of the page will feature an advertisers website.
For the people who change their start page, the URL will be http://www.paidpage.com/username — This will make it so you will earn credits EVERY time you open your browser window, and you do not have to login to receive the credits much like the reasons people dislike IGoogle (You have to visit it, login, and go back to homepage to see it).
The people using the paid start page will earn money that the advertisers pay us at PaidPage. The users will also earn 4% FOR LIFE for every friend they refer to the system. They will also earn 2% for every person their friend refers, and 1% for every person their friends FRIEND refers!
If you refer 10 people who refer 10 friends who refer 10 friends, and everyone earns $10, you will earn the following:
$10 - yourself
Tier1 - 10 referrals at $10 = $100, 4% = $4
Tier2 - 100 referrals at $10 = $1000, 2% = $20
Tier3 - 1000 referrals at $10 = $10000, 1% = $100
For referring 10 people who all make $10, you would earn $134. [Results may obviously vary]
The site will also feature the ability to add “alternate links” in your user profile. This will allow people to add a link to what they were currently using as their homepage before switching to Paid Page.
The actual site itself will feature a splash page and a user login/registration.
Users earn 50% of the advertising rate, so if an advertiser purchases 10,000 unique visits for 2 cents each, every person that views that ad will earn one penny.
In the user profiles, it should also display their multi level marketing network, such as:
MEMBERS EARNINGS
YOU: 1 $4.20
Tier2 Referrals 19 $21.50
Tier3 Referrals 108 $66.00
Total 128 $91.70

+++++++++++++++++ No official name, calling it Obleeq
The site will be a social news, bookmarking, and new media website ran by user generated content. I have a basic sketch of the sites look at http://obleeq.com. The voting of stories and the ones that receive the more + votes, the higher they rank. The site
will cater ONLY to bloggers and news journalists (magazines, etc). The site will feature a simple THUMBS UP / THUMBS DOWN feature (like stumbleupon.com). The widgets will require you to be a user to vote, but it will have an AJAX window that allows you to login to the site to vote, without ever leaving the page you are on. This will be so that bloggers can vote on their stories while reading other blogs that have the voting widget hosted over at their blogs or rss feeds.
In between the thumbs up and thumbs down, will be a PLUS sign. This will add the blog that the article is talking about to the users control panel. User control panels will display all of their favorited (”+” button) blogs RSS feeds in a text headline format, like an RSS reader.
My site will have a user profile page for every user that displays all of their information just like any other profile page, but also lists all of the blogs they own, as well as their favorite blogs of other members. Every blog will also get its own page (Example: http://www.rsshugger.com/MixedMarketArts.com) in which it promotes backlinks and rss feeds. There will be a “most popular” section that features the top blogs and what awards they have.
Top 100 blogs:
Most people who set the blog as their favorites (like technorati)
Most articles submitted
Most articles that hit the homepage
Top 100 users:
Submitted the most articles
Submitted the most comments
Submitted the most + votes
Submitted the most negative votes
Submitted the most frontpaged articles
Top 100 articles:
With the most votes [Maybe "of all time, monthly, weekly, yearly"?]
My site’s homepage will be nearly unmonetized, but feature an area at the top for a “Sponsored Article” where an advertiser can pay to promote his article on the homepage for a day instead of requiring on public votes. Under the “Sponsored Article” will be a section for “Editor’s Pick” where it will be articles that I myself, or other developers/staff feel have big influence. This will be for big updates related to the site like new features, as well as exclusive posts about info that leaks (New adsense ad units, etc). These will not be automated, but rather hand picked articles of importance. The articles below them will be user voted on and there should be 15 articles on the home page.

+++++++++++++++++ WordPress Plugin
With the evolution of the ‘million dollar idea’
MDHP (Pixels)
–> Clones of MDHP
–> Tagclouds
–> KingofTheBill
–> Million Dollar Wiki
–> My wordpress idea
The problem with the million dollar idea’s is that most of the advertisements have two flaws:
1. The websites are static, unchanging, and ugly.
2. After a one time visit, their is really no reason to ever go back [This is the milliondollar wiki problem]
3. Their is 99% bad content (or ads if you will), and 1% good content (Usually selling the ads).
My idea solves ALL THREE of the problems, and even expands into allowing ANYONE to reciprocate earnings.
The idea:
A wordpress plugin that allows you to sell text links on your blog (With the choice of nofollow or dofollow).
The catch: Only blogs are allowed, and the text links will be on EVERY text in which that word is used.
Example: My blog ‘mixedmarketarts.com’
Advertisers blog ‘contestbeat.com’ (They talk about blog contests)
Advertiser would buy the word “Contest” on my blog, and everytime I used the word contest in a blog post,
it would link to contestbeat.com.
This solves problem #1 because the blog would function as normal, with great content.
This solves problem #2 because of above said reason, it is still the same blog. They visit for info, not for ads.
This solves problem #3 because it is not a page of advertisements, but a “direct ad sale” for text link ads.
My (in development) idea:
We will have one ‘central server’ website, much like text-link-ads.com, in which we will list all of the websites for advertisers as well as publishers, and we will distribute the wordpress plugin for free. This will allow us to be like text link ads, and make 25-50% of the sale revenue just by connecting what the publishers are doing already. We will literrally own our own advertising company!

+++++++++++++++++ MyBlogEarnings
A web2.0 website that has graphs and analytics showing earning history for blogs, much like JohnChow.com and thousands of other bloggers do every month. You could have a nice widget for your readers showing earnings, expenses, traffic, technorati, profit, and graphs showing your growth.

+++++++++++++++++ RAPID.FM
For the purpose of this synopsis, I am calling this idea RAPID.fm
—-
Rapid.fm would be a free internet radio company. What youtube did for video, Rapid.fm would do for the music industry.
A free site where users could register an account at the main site (rapid.fm).
(Going to call these users the BANDS):
Independent labels, bands, commedians, content distributors, DJ’s, musicians, and show producers could register their own FREE page (band.rapid.fm) and get their own RADIO STATION that allowed for unlimited users to stream them when they played their songs (It would be live, and when they were not streaming it would show past “podcasts” like WMR).
The users of rapid.fm would use their memberships to leave comments, feedback, and even song requests on the BANDS pages. They could vote for which songs were the best, etc. They could write reviews of the albums/cd’s for the rest of the world to see.
(History):
Myspace blew up in popularity because all of the musicians made pages and promoted themselves. The community of musicians promoted people to subscribe to them through myspace, and as such, users had accounts. Ours would be the same way… once you control the musicians (or SELF PROMOTERS as I see them), you control the community.
On each BAND’s page, they would earn 50% of all of the adsense earnings, or they could opt-in their 50% to be donated to a charity (voted on by rapid.fm users on one of the homepage featured links).
On their band pages, they could also SELL their individual songs, as well as cd’s/albums, and Rapid.fm would take a commision for it.
—–
(For the homepage):
The homepage would feature big news about the sites, as well as “featured bands” for when a big band releases something exclusive on our site (for example, free Nine Inch Nales album to be distributed worldwide through the web). Beneath that would be a list of our radio stations that are LIVE, and an amount of live listeners. This would allow independent artists to get free listeners, which in a sense… we would be promoting other peoples work and selling their albums and cd’s for them. We would be doing everything myspace offered them years ago, except now they would be making 50% of adsense, 70-85% of cd sales, WE would be promoting THEM, and they would have more listeners and a better environment and live streaming songs.
(For the user profiles)
Duplicate everything myspace + live.fm have, and then add all the extra little things that every social network does. Profiles would be pretty much the same, their favorite songs, albums, stations, etc.
—
(Monetization methods):
1. The obvious huge profit one would be a global, network-wide ON AIR advertisement (like WMR). 70% of listeners remember things when you only remember 20% of what you read. Advertisers love on-air ads.
2. 50% of adsense on every BANDS page
3. 10-20% comission for every song or album sold
4. Hi-Def subscriptions (they get a higher kb/s streaming quality which means better audio and no advertisements)
5. Exclusive launches in combination with the homepage for BIG random events (like myspace does).
6. Sell ads directly to bands from the homepage. They would be paying us to promote themselves, but at the end of the day, we would be earning money to link and feature our own users.
–
*** QUICK SUMMARY ***
Music producers:
Market your music, brand your name, sell your cd’s, distribute sample songs/cd’s, gain popularity/recognition, make 50% of advertising revenue
DJ’s:
Make money from listeners, ads, and record sales. Gain popularity/recognition, brand your name
Both:
Get your own site prebuilt *.rapid.fm, or use your own domain, or host your server remotely (maybe)
Listeners:
100% free to listen (I am thinking 96kbps standard, a tiny monthly fee = 128kb/ps or something). Find new types of music, sample music/genre’s you like, and buy cd’s from artists you had not previously heard of)
Advertisers:
Voice ads on the servers, 70% of listeners remember things when you only remember 20% of what you read.
Staff (us):
10-20% commission for selling peoples records ($3 per $15 record sold)
50% of ad revenue across the network
$*** from voice ads over the network
$xxx from subscription fees
Have a profile on the site with all your info, (like last.fm)
Registered users can post comments + music requests + shoutouts on DJ/Music Producers pages
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
===============================
+++++++++++++++++ GUEST POST HUB
– A website like the sitepoint marketplace where people can pay $1 to say that they are looking for guest posts (and it gives them a listing with a dofollow link for that $1), and they can say what niche they are in. So people looking for a bunch of backlinks in their niche can come to this marketplace and see who needs guest posts in their niche to get related high PR backlinks, and the bloggers can get numerous guest posts for only $1, and if nobody wants to guest post for them, it was only $1 for an easy dofollow anchor text backlink
++++++++++++++++++
===============================
+++++++++++++++++ Massive Link Promotion
The site will be called “example.com” in this explanation to keep things simple. Example.com will be a ‘people powered news site’ that features the most popular stories that are voted on by the public. (Sorta like Digg, but with select categories instead of a few broad ones).
Example.com will feature a downloaded toolbar that has a “thumbs up” and “thumbs down” and “Profile” and “My News” buttons. (to get an idea, it will be like stumbleupon.com’s toolbar).
When people are browsing a website that they like, they will hit the “thumbs up” button. If it is the first time that page has been added to Example.com, they will fill out a short description, tags, as well as the category for it. This will list the site on an “upcoming page” for that category (like on Digg), where more people can vote it thumbs up or thumbs down and decide on if it is worth of getting popular on that category, or even on the frontpage.
The site will have adsense on the sidebar for every page, and it will share 50% of the impressions with the community. On the homepage, we can decide on the revenue sharing, but 50% on each specific article will go to the first person who submitted it.
Every link will be a direct html link, meaning it will give those articles more authority in the eyes of the search engines, and meaning webmasters will be able to improve their rank in Google just by promoting their shit with our toolbar. It will also create an honor system where people will submit their friends articles if they mention their site in that article. For example, Article A links to Article B (your blog), so you submit your article as well as Article A to Example.com. Both sites get a link and traffic, and since the more Article A is promoted, the more weight it shares when Google caches it and sees it links to Article B (you).
It is a win win for everyone, and it will allow anyone with any sort of niche interests to be able to find, vote on, and earn money for the news they enjoy.

I loved reading your startup ideas you never launched. Even if they didn’t launch it was still entertaining
Great ideas. I am not that creative to come up with things like that. I am more of the process-oriented type of person so it is nice to see idea-oriented people. Hope you get your ideas running!
